BODEGAS NEKEAS
Navarra
In 1990, eight families joined forces, setting out to honour and elevate 2000 years of winemaking heritage in the Valley of Nekeas, Navarra – one of Spain’s coolest and most distinguished viticultural zones. From the very beginning, the talented Concha Vecino was entrusted with leading the project, a role she continues to fulfill with passion and precision. Under her guidance, Nekeas has crafted a beautiful portfolio of elegant, expressive wines that consistently overdeliver for their modest price – arguably offering some of the best value in all of Spain.
One standout is their exceptional Chardonnay, which clearly sets them apart from their peers. Even more remarkable is the valley’s unique genetic heritage of Garnacha. Nekeas has undertaken a careful massal selection of this material, grafting it onto young vines to ensure its preservation. This distinct red Garnacha, with its loose clusters and small, concentrated berries, thrives in the valley’s cool climate – flourishing at altitudes of up to 550 meters. 'Cepa por Cepa' is the young vine expression, while 'El Chaparral' showcases fruit from the original bush vines, some of which are over 130 years old. Both wines reveal the singular personality of this Atlantic-influenced Garnacha – wines that are as distinctive as they are deeply rooted in place.
The Nekeas Valley is profoundly influenced by the nearby Pyrenees, just 30 kilometers away, and the Atlantic Ocean, 70 kilometers to the northwest. Their vineyards span five kilometres along the length of the valley – a corridor of steep slopes, diverse soils, and a patchwork of microclimates. Elevations range from 450 meters on the valley floor to 650 meters on the hillsides, where rainfall increases by as much as 250 mm annually. These conditions foster slow ripening and high natural acidity, lending the wines freshness and finesse that distinguish them from the riper, Rioja Oriental-style wines of southern Navarra.
THE WINES
Cabeza, Que Tal? Blanco (Viura, Chardonnay)
The two varieties are vinified separately. This is a pitch perfect Chardonnay-driven Spanish white blend. Stainless steel tanks keep the fruit on song, driven by a fresh citrus zing. Gorgeous value.
Midnight Amber Garnacha (pink/chilled red) (Garnacha)
This night-picked Grenache soaks on skins until dawn before being gently pressed and bottled. Call it a rosé or chilled red – it is super versatile and delicious!
Toma Tinto (Tempranillo, Garnacha)
Tempranillo and Garnacha in equal parts. The red Grenache throws seductive raspberry from the glass while the Tempranillo melds in some darker fruit and tannin, grounding the wine. This is from one of DO Navarra's finest family producers. So fresh, so good - this is one of the best red wines we've ever seen for the $$.
Bodegas Nekeas 'El Rincón' Chardonnay
From two vineyards – Berezábal + Odaiza – covering 6 hectares at 700 metres above sea level with a southern aspect (ie huge diurnal temperature fluctuation). 10 hours maceration followed by spontaneous fermentation in barrel with 3 months ageing in oak. Periodic bâtonnage adds texture and density.
‘El Rincón’ is superb. Stylistically it sits cleverly in a medium weight with beautiful, high quality oak wrapping. The whole package is dynamic, layered and refreshing with plentiful natural acidity giving trademark verve and tension.
Bodegas Nekeas 'Cepa Por Cepa' Garnacha
The fruit is from a 10 hectares of vineyard across 40 plots facing NW and SE. Cold maceration is carried out before fermentation, with a total of 20 days maceration.
Glossy and high-toned, with fresh cherry and rhubarb aromas, Cepa por Cepa is a cool climate Garnacha. Breathy, bright and beguiling this is the young vine planting of the valley’s ancient Garnacha DNA.
Bodegas Nekeas 'El Chaparral' Garnacha
This is Spain’s most Atlantic expression of Garnacha, sourced from vines between 70 and over 130 years old found at altitudes of 600m. Uniquely, the genetic material of these vines is native to the Nekeas Valley, making El Chaparral a true viticultural rarity. The wine offers remarkable depth of fruit, combined with striking freshness and purity. Nekeas' inimitable winemaker, Concha Vecino, treats this historic fruit with great care, ageing it in high-quality ex-Chardonnay barrels made from Allier oak. A distinctive, terroir-driven Garnacha— another exceptional value wine from Nekeas.
“Vivid garnet colour. Juicy and spicy on the palate with red fruit and black and white pepper flavors. Accents of coffee and minerality. Elegant, fine, and delicate, but supported by firm tannins.” 95 points – Tim Atkin MW
“A lovely garnacha with sweet blue fruit, fine spices and some flowers. Taut and juicy with tight but polished tannins. Lots of flavors, but not hefty. On the contrary, this is nimble and elegant.” 93 points – James Suckling
