COLLE CORVIANO

pescara - Abruzzo

Colle Corviano is a young, family run winery located in the mountainous Italian region of Abruzzo. Owners Antonella di Tonno and Rodrigo Redmont tend 30 hectares of vineyards situated on the left side of the Tavo Valley, between the towns of Loreto Aprutino (opposite Valentini, who processes their olives for them) and Collecorvino. All their fruit is estate grown without irrigation and their vineyards are farmed sustainably with an approach that promotes biodiversity. Built on renewable energy, their approach is in tune with the overall ethos of Abruzzo, a rugged region that has 4 designated national parks and is one of the greenest corners of Europe. Antonella and Rodrigo believe that sustainability goes beyond farming practice, crossing through human resources to the heart of how the business conducts itself.

In 2019, star enologist – and Nebbiolo specialist – Paolo Benassi, known from his work in Alto Piemonte at Tenuta Sella (Lessona), joined the company. His skill and dedication has taken the project to a whole new level, translating to bright wines with pure fruit profiles. Colle Corviano represents immense value across their authentic range.

THE WINES

Colle Corviano Pinot Grigio Colline Pescaresi IGP

Estate grown fruit planted at 300m above sea level in the esteemed terroir around Loreto Aprutino. The grapes are de-stemmed and cold macerated in stainless steel for a short time before gentle pressing.

This is nothing like the battery-acid, supermarket stuff you’re likely familiar with. Pure, lifted and bright, it has great fruit density with apple, honeysuckle and pear character. It is dashing with a medium bodied and a fine, fresh finish.

Colle Corviano Trebbiano D’Abruzzo DOC

Estate grown fruit planted at 300m above sea level in the esteemed terroir around Loreto Aprutino. The grapes are de-stemmed and cold macerated in stainless steel for a short time before gentle pressing.

The local Trebbiano in Abruzzo is the backbone of some of Italy's greatest white wines – those of Tiberio and Valentini (a neighbouring estate). The wine is fresh, racy and light, with tangerine, citrus flower and a lovely pithy texture from delicate extraction. It delivers so much class and character that is very difficult to find in Italian wine at this price.

Colle Corviano Pecorino D’Abruzzo DOC

Planted at 350 metres on stony limestone soils, this special single site is harvested by hand in mid-September. After gentle destemming, the grapes undergo an overnight cold maceration before the free-run juice is fermented in stainless steel over 12 days at 16°C.

The result is a Pecorino with stunning fruit purity, a rich body and great texture – elements that are energised and tightened by Pecorino’s trademark acidity. It is a perfect counterpoint to the leaner, cooler, “mountain style” Pecorino of Tiberio, strengthening our understanding of this unique grape variety and two of its heritage terroirs. Each stands as a benchmark for the variety and both promise excellent ageing potential.

"Orange blossom and jasmine meet beach grasses and crushed rocks on the nose, with the floral minerality coming through on a balanced and rich palate that's ripe with citrus through the finish." 91 Points – Danielle Callegari, Wine Enthusiast.

Colle Corviano Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo DOC

Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo is the appellation for the pink wine of Abruzzo. It is made with 100% Montepulciano which throws a beautiful cherry colour and delivers good structure - fertile ground for chilled red wine drinkers. Colle Corviano's version shows bright aromas of strawberry and pomegranate, dotted with zesty accents of blood orange. This brisk, tasty rosato is medium-bodied and excellent value.

The nose is savory, with wild herbs, crushed rocks, guava, green watermelon and blood orange, while the palate balances with watermelon, wild strawberry and lots of salty, tangy notes like licking a rock, before a warm, citrus finish.” 90 points – Danielle Callegari, Wine Enthusiast

Colle Corviano Sangiovese Terre di Chieti IGP

From purchased fruit in the Terre di Chieti zone. Destemmed before temperature controlled ferment with 10 days of maceration and pumping over. Aged for 3 months in 34 hectolitre French oak vats.

This is one of our go-to lunch wines. It is pretty, lifted, lightly structured and low on the booze – with a different face to the Tuscan examples of this grape. This is a serious wine that will open over hours in the glass, delivering a lot of wine for the money.

Colle Corviano Montepulciano D’Abruzzo DOC (1.5l Magnums available)

From a pergola trained, old-vine vineyard on the estate, the fruit is hand-picked, sorted and destemmed. Temperature controlled ferment with 10 days of maceration and pumping over. Aged for 6 months in 34 hectolitre French oak vats followed by time in bottle. You can spot the skillful touch of Nebbiolo-specialist enologist Paolo Benassi.

This inky beauty is a gorgeous introduction to Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, delivering a thoughtful, elegant and balanced contrast to the oaky, overripe industrial stuff often associated with the grape.

An elegant, high-quality Montepulciano that punches well above its price. The nose is lifted and complex, blending ripe morello cherry and liquorice with dried clove, and earth. It has a lush core of dark cherry fruit complemented by light vanilla spice. The plush, rounded fruit texture is underscored by zippy acidity and fine-grained tannins that provide a serious dimension to the wine. A fantastic food wine and incredible value.” – Importer note
